Often labeled as Acer palmatum 'Herbstfeuer', we label it as Acer circinatum x palmatum 'Herbstfeuer' as it is a hybrid between circinatum and palmatum found in Germany. This tree gives you the rounded leaf of a circinatum and fall color, but hardiness and vigor of a palmatum. The names Herbstfeuer' means "autumn fire", but some claim it means "Fall Leader" as this is one of the first trees to go into fall color. If this was the case, the spelling would be Herbst führer. Since the world maple checklist has the tree as being registered in 1985 by Andreas Bartels as 'Herbstfeuer' I would not think that would be the case, but it makes an interesting selling point for sure. Fall color can be bold oranges to fire engine red. Awesome plant. Give room as this plant makes a show case, 20 ft tall and wide in 15 years. We have planted it at the front driveway at Maplewood Gardens at MrMaple. Grows well for us in the sun, but can definitely handle shade, too.
