In traditional Japanese culture, "maiko" were young apprentices to geisha girls. Their main jobs consisted of singing songs, performing dances, and serving drinks.  Being this Japanese maple is extremely beautiful and dwarf in nature, this name is quite fitting. 'Maiko' forms a mid-size dwarf tree reaching 6-8ft in 15 years. In the early training of  "maiko" they are taught to how to gracefully serve green tea. In the early spring, Acer palmatum 'Maiko' gracefully serves a spring display of bright green palmate leaves. Some leaves may appear non-uniform and twisted in habit, giving the appearance that the leaves are dancing. You will be dancing too when you see the amazing fall colors of yellow and orange.
