'Red Pygmy' is a red linearilobum selection that was found in a garden in Northwest Italy and introduced by Esveld Nursery in Holland. 'Red Pygmy' is quite unique in the fact that it may reach 8-10 ft in height and also in width in 15 years. 'Red Pygmy' may have a more broad spreading form than most of the other red strapleafs, forming a flat top with age. It handles the sun quite well, and performs exceptionally, winning a Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit.
Give 'Red Pygmy' protection from the hot afternoon sun for best color throughout the season. In full sun, 'Red Pygmy' may turn bronze green during the hotter parts of the summer. The fall color on 'Red Pygmy' is a bright scarlet red. The thin red strapleafs provide a great texture in the landscape.
