Acer palmatum 'Shaina'
Dwarf Red 'Shaina' Japanese Maple
Zones 5-9
Many nurserymen say that spotting broom mutations in ornamental trees is a skill that is learned. Once learned, one will find many brooms in all types of trees. One of the best broom-hunting nurserymen in the country was the late Dick Wolfe of Red Maple Nursery in Pennsylvania. Dick found âShainaâ as a witchesâ broom in a large Bloodgood-type Japanese maple planted in front of the Department of Public Safety Building at the Villanova University and named by Billy Schwartz.
If you plan on visiting the broom, which hangs about 9 ft in the air off of its âparentâ tree, make sure to get permission from the University Police. Undoubtedly, our experience is that you will still get questioned by every University police officer that enters the building. Dick was a good friend and mentor to Billy Schwartz of Green Mansion Nurseries. âShainaâ was named after Billyâs daughter.
The name âShainaâ is Hebrew for âbeautifulâ, which is quite fitting for such a pretty Japanese maple. âShainaâ performs exceptionally well for us here in the south. It leafs out as a bright red, maturing to a deeper red that holds fairly well throughout the summer. Fall colors are bright crimson reds. In 15 years, âShainaâ may reach 3-4 ft by 3-5 ft in a dense manner. Being a slower grower, âShainaâ is great for small spaces and container.
Limited Quantities Available !! As we have over a thousand cultivars of Japanese maples, we often do not have many of each cultivar. We recommend that you buy the Japanese maples you want immediately as we often sell out of certain selections.
