Acer palmatum ‘Star of Assisi' Rare Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum 'Star of Assisi'
Rare
Japanese Maple

Zones 5-9

'Star of Assisi' is a compact dward red Japanese maple that was found as a dwarf mutation that many would call a witches broom. Our friend Bob Mcafferty found this. His terminology that he uses for these dwarf mutations is that they are blessings because they are given from God. I personally like this idea much better than continuing the crazy terminology that perpetuates the idea that a witch had something to do with it.

'Star of Assisi' is quite special. It leafs out in the spring as a brighter red color, turning to maroon for summer, then a brighter red in the fall. The color on 'Star of Assisi' holds well for us even in the shade. The compact small habit is quite nice, making this Japanese maple easy to use in any garden. 'Star of Assisi' may reach 4 ft in height by 4 ft in width in 10 years.
