‘Attraction’ is a bright red Japanese maple in the spring, maturing to deep maroon, then to a scarlet red in the fall. The overall habit is upright with a nice irregular symmetric form. According to Vertrees 4th edition, ‘Attraction’ is said to have been imported from Japan to the Netherlands in the 1970’s, eventually making its way to the United States via J.D. Vertrees himself. Since the imported name of “Atropurpureum Superbum” seemed silly as it was Latin for “a fabulous red form”, some began calling this tree ‘Superbum’, while others chose the name ‘Attraction’. Today you may find this tree under either name. This tree will grow to 12-15 ft within 15 years.
