'Tsukushigata' is a unique Japanese maple with large star shaped leaves that are brick red in color in the early spring becoming more chocolate red as they mature. This tree is especially beautiful and under-utilized. I think it might get more mainstream if it had a name like “Chocolate Stars”. ‘Tsukushigata’ has a great rich chocolate color to the leaves and also has nice lime green stemming that creates a winning contrasting combination. During the summer the lime green veins become more prominent in the leaf. ‘Tsukushigata’ may turn from yellow to fiery orange red in the fall. ‘Tsukushigata’ may reach 10-12 ft in height in 10 years.
