Acer robustum, also known as Acer ceriferum, is an extremely rare maple in section palmata, series palmata. The leaves of this Chinese maple are extremely round, almost like a full-moon maple, with more pubescence in the early spring. Specimens of Acer ceriferum are once again growing in Chapel Hill, NC and Philadelphia, PA making this mid-sized tree very hardy and a great tree for the landscape. Acer robustum also appears to be fairly frost resistant. In 20 years, this selection will reach about 15 ft in height. Fall colors are outstanding neon yellows to orange. Recently Peter Gregory published a paper on Acer robustum through the Maple Society's Open Science initiative that stated that Acer robostum should technically be referred to as Acer anhweiense.
