An extremely rare hybrid between Acer shirasawanum and Acer palmatum, 'Shira Red' is very unique and different. It has the large full red leaf of an Acer palmatum selection, yet the branching of Acer shirasawanum. The seed on 'Shira Red' also turns upward above the leaf which is typical of Acer shirasawanum. The large graceful leaves on this Japanese maple are exceptionally beautiful, especially in the fall when this red Japanese maple puts on fall color display of bright orange. 'Shira Red' forms a mid-sized Japanese maple up to 10 ft tall in 10 years. Protection from the hot afternoon sun is recommended for best growth.
