'Tollgate’ is a large fruiting selection of American pawpaw with a good banana-like sweet taste. Mid spring flowers develop into fruit for the fall. ‘Tollgate’ has a typical ripening stage, ripening between the second and third weeks of October. 'Tollgate' is considered a mid-season producer. ‘Tollgate' was a selection by Tollgate Gardens and Nursery (formally Corwin Davis Nursery) of Michigan.  The fruit is highly desired by fruit aficionados, native plant enthusiasts and homesteaders. Fall color on pawpaw trees is a bright golden yellow adding some garden interest to this edible ornamental. ‘Tollgate’ may reach 15 ft in height and width in 10 years. For best pollination and a large crop of fruit, it is recommended to plant multiple types of cultivars or seedlings in an area.

The photo is a seedling from pawpaw, not 'Tollgate'. We are showing this to show how a typical pawpaw grows in the landscape.  Unlike seedlings, a grafted selection like 'Tollgate' will consistently display the mid-season ripening of banana-tasting fruit characteristic that ‘Tollgate’ was chosen for.  We are using this photo to show the typical form of the the pawpaw tree.
