When thinking about the mountains, everyone loves the mountain flame azaleas known as Rhododendron calendulaceum. ‘Calendulaceum Gold’ is a selection of one of the best golden yellow selections of native flame azaleas that was introduced by Earl Sommerville. It is sometimes referred to as ‘Earl’s Calendulaceum Gold’. ‘Calendulaceum Gold’ has a nice clear golden color to the blooms and like many of the native azaleas a sweet honeysuckle-like scent. ‘Calendulaceum Gold’ may reach 6 ft in height by 4 ft in width in 10 years. Give ‘Calendulaceum Gold’ good drainage and a highly organic and acidic soil.
