Kelly Strickland, a native plant enthusiast, who loved the nuances of each and every plant. His goal was to find the very best of each native. He would travel around the mountains looking for the best selections of many of the native azaleas with a shovel in hand. One of his goals was to find the best red azalea. As a chance Rhododendron flammeum seedling Kelly found what he considered, and most still consider, the best clear red native azalea. This became ‘Kelly’s Red’. ‘Kelly’s Red’ displays large red blooms that are as red as a Christmas Poinsettia according to azalea experts Ernest Koone. ‘Kelly’s Red’ may get 6 ft in height by 4 ft in width in 10 years. Make sure to give ‘Kelly’s Red’ good drainage and highly organic acidic soil for the best establishment, growth rate, and blooms.
