Azalea 'Mardis Gras' Salmon Pink Blooms

'Mardis Gras’ is a colorful selection of southern indica  that blooms in the early spring. The blooms are quite attractive with white jewel border around a pink bloom with a darker purple-red blotch. The blooms are quite large, colorful and it’s no wonder how this azalea got its name. ‘Mardis Gras’ may reach 4 ft in height by 4 ft in width in 10 years.

‘Mardis Gras’ is a older azalea selection that was traced back to a plant  that Maarten van der Giessen received from plant legend, Margie Jenkins, who was a pioneer in horticulture for the South. While we do not know who bred this awesome plant, it’s rich history and great name is quite apparent. Others have been selling a more finicky variety under the name ‘Mardis Gras’ which has a different color pattern.
