Corylopsis spicata 'Golden Spring' is selection of golden leaf Chinese winter hazel that was found as a chance seedling by Mr. Yamaguchi in Japan. For us in WNC, the large golden flowers emerge in mid-to-late March before the foliage, giving this shrub some early season interest. The large round leaves emerge in the spring giving a bright yellow in the landscape. Throughout the season 'Golden Spring' gives a great yellow to chartreuse color making this selection quite attractive. In the fall, 'Golden Spring' gets more yellow with some bronze to orange tones across the leaf. 'Golden Spring' may reach 4-5 ft in height by 5-6 ft in width in 10 years. Give 'Golden Spring' protection from the hot afternoon sun for best color. 'Golden Spring' has also been known under the names 'Aurea' and 'Ogon'.
