Some claim that this showcase beech is perhaps one of the smallest beech cultivars. 'Mercedes' reaches 5 ft in height by 4 ft in width in 10-12 years with an extremely dense habit. The fall color on 'Mercedes' can range from yellow to orange. The foliage is thread-like, almost laceleaf. 'Mercedes' is believed to have originated as a mutation off the cultivar 'Asplenifolia'. 'Mercedes' is an excellent form of European beech and is superb for small gardens.
