Hydrangea aspera ssp. sargentiana is a unique large leafed hydrangea that has a fuzzy velvet-like appearance. The bark has a nice pealing, almost paper bark look. The blooms, which appear in the late summer continue early fall . They have a deep lavender color on the flowers in the center of the bloom. This is highlighted by a rim of larger white flowers on the edge of the bloom. Hydrangea aspera sargentiana, also know as Sargent’s rough leafed hydrangea. Hydrangea ssp sargentiana is a giant. It may reach 8 ft in height by 5 ft in width in 10 years. Give this hydrangea plenty of room as it likes to show off.
