'Red Sensation' is a newer selection that was found in the The Netherlands as a sport on the cultivar 'Early Sensation'. While 'Early Sensation' displays baby pink blooms, 'Red Sensation' is known for displaying a deeper red to red purple blooms. While 'Red Sensation' is known for this red color, a pH lower than 5.5 will often result in more blue color. For best deep red color we prefer a pH of 6 or greater. 'Red Sensation' blooms on both the old wood and new wood, which makes this an excellent hydrangea for everyone, even those who have harsh winters. 'Red Sensation' may reach 2-3 ft in height and width in 10 years. This small stature makes 'Red Sensation' great for small spaces or containers. Remember that in zone 5 and colder plants in containers should be protected. 'Red Sensation' was brought to the United States by our good friends at Concept Plants.
