Pinus mugo 'Carstens’, also known as ‘Carsten’s Wintergold’, is one of the best dwarf pines with an exceptional yellow gold winter interest. During the spring and summer, the needles turn green, but change to a brilliant golden yellow for winter. ‘Carstens’ forms a small dense mushroom shape reaching 2-3 ft in height and width in 10 years. ‘Carstens’ was found by Erwin Carstens of Germany in the early 1980s.
