Pinus thunbergii 'Aocha', often called 'Aocha matsu', is a Japanese black pine with a golden yellow variegation that is stunning. The variegation on this import from Japan is quite attractive on a dark needled pine, but is more unstable. If large branches persist without any yellow variegation it is recommended to remove them from the tree. 'Aocha matsu' was originally recorded as the cultivar name, however it is now understood that "matsu" means a type of two needle pine describing species including Pinus thunbergii. 'Aocha' may reach 10-12 ft in 10 years.
