In Japan, there is quite the fascination with Japanese omoto, rohdea japonica. It is a unique plant with many cultivars. In the United States, they are just now becoming available to plant collectors. Rohdea japonica is a neat shade perennial that grows in a clumping fashion similar to that of a hosta, but evergreen. During winter months, Japanese omoto can have red berries toward the base that give an additional winter interest.

'Suncrest' is a neat selection of Japanese omoto that has a white rib that runs down the center of the leaf. This unique plant growth is referred to as a "dragon crest" by collectors of Japanese omoto. 'Suncrest' is quite unique as some edges and dragon crest are more variegated than others. Add 'Suncrest' to your shade garden to add some unique evergreen appeal.
