Japanese umbrella pines are unique, rare, and difficult to propagate. 'Picola' is a short dense compact Japanese umbrella pine with shorter needles than the species. 'Picola' has a nice tight conical shape, growing about 3-4 inches a year. 'Picola' typically reaches about 3-4 ft in 10 years. 'Picola' was found and introduced by G.D. Böhlje Nursery of Germany. In 2012, Picola was given Conifer of the Year honors by the American Conifer Society.
