Cornus florida 'Appalachian Spring' was found as a chance seedling from native dogwoods growing near Camp David in Maryland. It was selected by the breeding program at the University of Tennessee because of its resistance to anthracnose and its exceptional red fall color on the leaves. The blooms of âAppalachian Springâ are typical to that of the species, being a reliable joy of white blooms in the early spring. âAppalachian Springâ is a vigorous grower, reaching 15 ft in height in 10 years.Â
