Hydrangea macrophylla 'Purple Bayou’ is quite the spectacle in the landscape and garden. When the acidity is higher, ‘Purple Bayou’ has deep purple petals with a blue center to the eye. The effect is a glowing metallic purple that gets more and more intense. In more lime-based soils, give ‘Purple Bayou’ ammonium sulfate to get this deep purple color that gives ‘Purple Bayou’ its name. When in less acidic soils, ‘Purple Bayou’ may be more pink outlined in light pink. To get this effect give ‘Purple Bayou’ garden lime.
