Sciadopitys verticillata ‘Gruene Kugel’ is a compact, slow-growing cultivar of the Japanese Umbrella Pine, prized for its dense, rounded, globe-like habit and rich, deep green needles. Its foliage forms the characteristic whorled “umbrella” pattern of the species, but in a tighter, more sculptural shape, making it ideal for small gardens, container planting, or as a striking accent in the landscape. ‘Gruene Kugel’ grows very slowly and maintains a neatly rounded form without much pruning. After 10 years, it typically reaches about 3–4 ft tall and 3–4 ft wide, retaining its compact, ornamental character. Like all umbrella pines, it prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil and performs best in full sun to partial shade, where its deep green foliage provides year-round texture and elegance.
