Rhododendron calendulaceum, often referred to as the native flame azalea, is one of the most amazing native azaleas. Locally in my area, the can be found on mountain tops and trails like the Appalachian Trail and Roan Mountain. These orange blooming azaleas are the essence of the mountains. When in bloom in spring, they add so much to the landscape. These native flame azaleas prefer good drainage, organic matter when planted, and a more acidic soil. Rhododendron calendulaceum may reach 6 ft in height by 4 ft in width in 10 years.
