Rhododendron flammeum, known as the Oconee Azalea, is native to South Carolina and Georgia. Sometimes referred as the "Piedmont Azalea", it is typically found at elevations less than 1500 ft.  Rhododendron flammeum is an ornamental native with an orange to red bloom that is quite attractive, attracting visitors of bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and even the occasional neighbor or passing gardener. Rhododendron flammeum may reach 6 ft in height by 4 ft in width 10 years. Make sure to give Rhododendron flammeum good drainage and a high humus organic soil.
